Digital learning is opening new pathways for farmers, entrepreneurs and agribusiness professionals to access knowledge wherever they are. But access to a course does not automatically translate into a stronger enterprise.
The real measure of learning begins after the course ends: when an agripreneur applies the knowledge to improve production, rethink a business model, reduce costs, enter a new market or prepare an enterprise for investment.
At workshops convened by GIZ through the Agri-Business Facility for Africa, the discussions emphasised content that is practical, locally relevant and connected to the decisions entrepreneurs make every day. A course on record keeping must help an SME understand its costs. A module on marketing should help a processor position a product for a real buyer. Training on climate-smart agriculture should translate into practices that protect both production and profitability.
Ideas are not the gap
AAA also took part in evaluating business ideas developed by learners completing Agribusiness e-Academy courses in the maize, cocoa, livestock and cashew value chains. The proposals showed that African agripreneurs are not short of ideas. What many lack are the resources to act on them — follow-on mentorship, productive equipment, finance, market linkages and technical assistance.
For AAA, the future of e-learning is not about increasing course enrolment. It is about building a pathway from knowledge to application, application to investment, and investment to enterprise growth.
